Description
This session looks at some definitions of sexual desire and arousal as well as the causes and management of absent or low sexual desire and arousal in women. It covers simple management and arranging onward referral for female patients with these problems.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the basics of the causes and management of low sexual desire and arousal in women
- Identify low desire and arousal in a clinical setting
- Discuss further management and arrange onward referral for female patients with sexual desire and arousal difficulties
Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should have:
- Basic knowledge of female genital anatomy and physiology
- Completed Module 1/Sexual Problems - Part 1 (260-0002)
- Completed Module 1/Sexual Problems - Part 2 (260-0003)
- Completed Module 1/Sexual Problems - Part 3 (260-0017)
This session will discuss the notions of sexual desire and arousal in women as well as the different models and ways to understand these sexual events, including the most recent concept of the natural overlapping of these two states.
In addition, it will look at the common causes of impaired sexual desire and arousal (or the combination of these issues known as female sexual interest and arousal disorder (FSIAD)), such as life events, illnesses and medications.
We will also present the UK epidemiology of FSIAD, how to detect these problems in your practice and how to undertake simple management and onward referral if necessary.
