Psychosexual Medicine course
This session provides an introduction to the concept of sexual dysfunction and the impact of sexual dysfunction on patients. It discusses the causes, initial assessment and referral pathways involved in the management of sexual dysfunction.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- 12.1 Explain common causes and range of sexual dysfunction
- 12.2 List the physical and psychological factors that contribute to sexual dysfunction
- 12.3 Describe the principles of managing a person with psychosexual problems
- 12.4 Recognise common presentations and respond appropriately
The majority of people (apart from those who are asexual) are to a greater or lesser extent interested in sex, and satisfying sexual relationships generally contribute positively to happiness and health.
Dr Miriam Hillyard’s academic research encompasses topics of sexualised drug use, LGBTQ+ health, and sexual victimisation. She is currently an MRC Addictions Research Clinical Training Doctoral Fellow at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience in London.
