Periodontal Instrumentation Techniques course for Dental Practice
This session guides you through the definitions of dental scaling, leading onto stating the difference between the use of hand instruments and power or ultrasonic scalers.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- State the definition of dental scaling instrumentation
- Define the difference between root surface debridement and root planing
- List the differences between hand instrumentation and power-driven instrumentation
- Explain the effectiveness of power-driven ultrasonic scalers whilst carrying out periodontal therapy
There is an increasing awareness of the role that power driven or mechanical scalers play in the treatment of periodontal disease, especially when carrying out root surface debridement.
Before commencing this session you should have knowledge of:
- Periodontal disease
- The range of dental scalers available and their application
- The range of power driven scalers available
- An understanding of the prerequisites before carrying out any periodontal therapy
Michael Wheeler qualified as a Dental Hygienist in the late seventies, spending his early career in the Royal Air Force. His first NHS appointment was as Oral Health Promotion Co-ordinator in Somerset focusing on both the development of programmes for care staff and those in early years education. Mike then held a variety of NHS management appointments ranging from developing a community dental service to PDS to commissioning of dental services, including the introduction of the 2006 dental contract; more recently he was responsible for the management of Bristol Dental Hospital and School.
He is a past president of BSDHT and trustee of the British Dental Health Foundation. Currently Michael combines a role in general dental practice with training members of the wider dental team, as well as being Dental Advisor to the Centre for Workforce Intelligence and a Dental Tutor for the South West Dental Deanery.
Judy qualified as a Dental Hygienist in the early nineties, spending her early career in the Royal Air Force, gaining experience in the military practice setting in the UK, Germany and Nepal. In addition, Judy worked in the hospital setting receiving a commendation for working with cancer patients.
Judy has a long standing commitment to dental education both as a tutor dental Hygienist in the RAF and at Bristol Dental Hospital.
Judy, for many years was responsible for the curriculum development of the BDS Undergraduate program in Bristol, including regulation for both the BDS and Dental Hygiene programs to ensure that they meet the requirements of the GDC document ‘Preparing for Practice’.
Judy currently continues to be a tutor in Bristol, plan and deliver training for a dental company and finds time to work in general dental practice and take part in oral health initiatives.
