Surgical Considerations In ICU
Session Overview
Description
This session explores the management of surgical patients in the ICU.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Formulate an accurate assessment of a general surgical patient on ICU
  • Initiate appropriate investigations in general surgical patients on ICU
  • Initiate immediate management plans in general surgical patients on ICU

The assessment of acutely unwell surgical patients on the ICU can be extremely difficult.

If the patient is intubated and ventilated no history can be taken and decisions must be made on clinical findings alone.

Early warning signs of impending abdominal catastrophe can be subtle and easily missed.

In this session an overview of the assessment of general surgical patients will be undertaken.

This will then be applied to four clinical scenarios where suitable investigations and management plans will be formulated.
