This session provides an introduction to the key issues to consider with regard to children learning more than one language. It will provide you with current evidence-based guidance, relevant for practitioners advising parents of bilingual children.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Recognise the benefits of learning two or more languages when under five
  • Identify and disregard common myths
  • Describe the challenges faced by bilingual children in the UK

Without an understanding of bilingualism, there is a risk that normally developing bilingual children are misdiagnosed as having problems with learning, behaviour and speech, language and communication. Conversely, children who do need additional services may be missed as you do not share a language.

Dr Sean Pert,
Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

Dr Pert has been a Speech and Language Therapist for 25 years and in that time has been a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist, a service manager for a busy children's service and a trainer and educator. Dr Sean Pert is a Senior Clinical Lecturer at The University of Manchester.

Dr Pert has published widely on bilingualism, including research papers, book chapters, bilingual speech and language assessments as well as writing the Clinical Guidelines on Working with Bilingual Children with Speech, Language and Communication Disorders for the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists. Dr Sean Pert has won the Sternberg Award for Clinical Innovation on an unprecedented three occasions, including his work with Dr Carol Stow for their work with Pakistani heritage children.

Carol Stow,
Leader of a specialist speech and language therapy service for bilingual children and their families

Carol worked as a speech and language therapist in the NHS for over thirty years. Initially working as a specialist in adult neurological and voice disorders she subsequently focussed on working with bilingual children. As a consultant SLT she built and led a highly specialist team of speech and language therapists, bilingual assistants and interpreters who worked with children speaking languages other than English as their main or mother tongue. This team developed an international profile for its work delivering therapy in the child's mother tongue rather than the therapists' mother tongue of English.

Carol was twice the recipient of the RCSLT Sternberg Award for Clinical Innovation. Carol has published widely on the subject of bilingual children with speech disorders, including the first standardised speech assessment of Pakistani heritage languages spoken by children living in England. She has given many international conference presentations, led workshops, taught at undergraduate and graduate level and contributed to and reviewed guidelines for speech and language professionals working with bilingual children both in the UK and internationally.

For many years Carol was a trustee of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) and chaired their Professional Development and Standards Board. Her contribution to the profession was recognised when she was elected a Fellow of RCSLT in 2009. Carol is now retired from clinical practise.
