Basic Obstetrics
Session Overview
Description
This session will explore the maternal and fetal problems commonly encountered in pregnancy and labour, and obstetric interventions aimed at reducing morbidity will be introduced.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- State what the most common causes of maternal death are worldwide
- Recall what the most common forms of severe maternal and fetal morbidity are in the UK
- Explain how obstetric interventions can improve maternal and fetal outcomes
- Recognize how multidisciplinary team-work can improve the outcome of labour
Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should:
- Possess an undergraduate level of prior obstetric knowledge
Review the following session:
- Module 04a/Obstetrics/Physiology of Labour
Most people in developed countries expect to navigate pregnancy and labour without major difficulty. This session will consider what the ‘normal’ outcomes of pregnancy might be, drawing upon UK and global morbidity data to inform our thoughts. Common obstetric interventions will then be described and their ability to prevent maternal and fetal disease will be gauged.
