Cellular Metabolism, Enzymes
Session overview
Description
This session describes the structure, function and mechanism of action of enzymes. Their role in regulation and cellular physiology is identified.

Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Identify the primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary protein structure
  • Explain the models of enzyme catalysis
  • Draw the thermodynamic process occurring during catalysis
  • Draw the effect of pH and temperature changes on enzymatic activity
  • Draw the effect of competitive and non-competitive inhibitor on enzymatic activity

  • The function of the enzyme depends on its quaternary structure
  • The speed of reaction is enhanced by up to 10^14
  • The reaction rate is substrate, enzyme, temperature and pH dependent
  • Enzyme activity can be modified by the presence of effectors
  • Enzyme control is a key factor in the regulation of cellular activity
