This session looks in detail at the hormones of the adrenal cortex, principally cortisol and aldosterone.

Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Outline the biosynthetic pathways of adrenocortical hormones
  • Discuss the control, release and pharmacokinetics of adrenocortical hormones
  • Describe the sites of action and physiological effects of adrenocortical hormones

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should complete:

  • 07b_33_04 Adrenal Hormones I

This session describes the basic physiology and functions of the hormones that emanate from the adrenal cortex.

These hormones are important in both health and disease and thus are relevant to the practice of anaesthesia and intensive care medicine.
