Anaesthesia Fundamentals | Anatomy | Nasal Anatomy
Nasal Anatomy
Session Overview
Description
This session focuses on the anatomy of the nose. It will also explore complications of nasal instrumentation, the functions of the nose, and its vascular and nerve supply.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the nasal anatomy with respect to its structures and spatial orientation
- Describe the potential complications of nasal instrumentation
- Discuss the functions of the nose
Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should:
- Have a basic understanding of human anatomy
- Have an understanding of the use of an endoscope
The nose is one of the dominant features of the human face. It is important functionally in terms of airway patency, humidification, voice and olfaction.
The nose is also of great aesthetic importance. A small nose is generally considered more attractive than a large one. Alterations to nose size and shape are a great source of income to aesthetic surgeons (and anaesthetists).
This session will look at nasal anatomy in terms of:
- Structure and spatial orientation
- Complications of instrumentation
- Blood supply
- Venous drainage
- Nerve supply
- Paranasal sinuses
