This session provides the knowledge base required to identify possible causes of abdominal pain and describes an approach to the patient.
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- List the possible causes of abdominal pain
- Explain mechanisms underlying abdominal pain
- Identify appropriate investigations in patients with abdominal pain
Here are some points to consider before moving on with the session:
Abdominal pain:
- May be subtle in terms of signs and symptoms, but can have sinister underlying pathology and vice versa
- May originate in the abdomen or be referred from extra abdominal sources, metabolic sources or neurogenic causes
- Requires meticulous history and physical examination
There are many possible causes of abdominal pain.
