A pioneering study led by WEHI has demonstrated how high-resolution retinal imaging, powered by artificial intelligence (AI), is transforming disease detection and management. By analysing over 50,000 retinal images, researchers have identified crucial links between retinal thickness and conditions such as type 2 diabetes, dementia, and multiple sclerosis. This breakthrough paves the way for routine eye care imaging to become a valuable, non-invasive screening tool for systemic and neurological diseases.

Retinal Imaging: A Window into Systemic Health

The retina, an integral part of the central nervous system, provides a unique insight into neurological and metabolic health. Many conditions, including neurodegenerative disorders and metabolic diseases, show early signs in the retina before symptoms appear elsewhere in the body. With more than three billion people globally affected by brain-related disorders, early and accessible diagnostic methods are crucial.

Lead researcher, Dr Vicki Jackson of WEHI, highlights the significance of retinal imaging in healthcare. She explains that detailed retinal assessments can provide early warning signs of neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, allowing for timely intervention and improved patient management.

Using AI-driven analysis, the study produced the most detailed retinal maps ever developed, uncovering intricate links between retinal thinning and various health conditions. These findings suggest that retinal thickness could serve as a useful biomarker for disease diagnosis and ongoing monitoring.

The Role of Genetics in Retinal Health

Beyond establishing disease associations, the study also uncovered new genetic factors influencing retinal thickness. These discoveries contribute to a deeper understanding of retinal development and its relationship to overall health. By examining genetic and health data from a broad population, researchers identified 294 genes associated with retinal structure and function, many of which play a role in disease progression.

These genetic insights reinforce the potential of retinal imaging not only as a diagnostic tool but also as a method for assessing an individual’s predisposition to certain conditions. The ability to pinpoint specific areas of the retina where changes occur enhances the precision of disease detection.

AI and the Future of Precision Medicine

Study co-lead, Professor Melanie Bahlo AM, a bioinformatician at WEHI, emphasises how AI is accelerating medical discoveries. "Advanced AI technologies are revolutionising our ability to interpret complex biological data. By applying AI to large-scale retinal imaging, we can uncover unprecedented insights into disease progression and risk factors," she explains.

This research underscores the growing field of oculomics, which involves using eye imaging to diagnose and predict health conditions. Just as mammograms have revolutionised breast cancer screening, retinal imaging has the potential to become a routine and powerful diagnostic tool for a wide range of diseases.

For Australian doctors, these findings highlight the importance of integrating retinal imaging into routine medical care. Ophthalmologists, neurologists, endocrinologists, and general practitioners can leverage this technology for early detection and improved disease management. This research was made possible through collaboration with key institutions, including the UK Biobank, University of Washington, Lowy Medical Research Institute, Moorfields Eye Hospital, and University College London. Funding from the Lowy Medical Research Institute has further supported efforts to harness AI and imaging technologies for medical breakthroughs.

Published in Nature Communications, the study represents a major step forward in incorporating advanced imaging techniques into mainstream healthcare. As AI continues to enhance diagnostic precision and accessibility, retinal imaging is set to play a vital role in the future of precision medicine.
