Many general practitioners (GPs) have historically relied on recruitment companies or practice managers to assist them in applying for a paper-based Medicare provider number. This traditional process often involved the GP providing necessary supporting documents, such as passports and work rights, and physically signing the application form.
However, as these GPs embark on a new wave of job search or prepare to accept new positions, they are now encountering a somewhat simplified process. Some instances, which once required manual paperwork can now be efficiently handled online through Health Professional Online Services (HPOS).
If you're a medical practitioner and eligible, you can create an additional Medicare provider number via HPOS. To apply for an additional provider number through HPOS, you must either:
You may also be eligible if you are an international Medical Graduate and meet section 19AA requirements with a postgraduate qualification. In such cases, each application will be assessed to determine if a section 19AB exemption can be applied. It is important to note though that not all 19AB exemptions are available through HPOS.
