In most clinical settings following the birth of a baby, health professionals meet parents facing challenges, which include disrupted parental sleep, postpartum fatigue, unsettled or screaming babies, breastfeeding problems including breast and nipple pain, baby weight-gain worries, wind, colic, reflux, allergies, and tongue tie concerns, and parental anxiety and depression.
Our charity Possums & Co offers health professionals the opportunity for professional development in Neuroprotective Developmental Care (NDC). NDC provides evidence-based interventions for problems of breastfeeding, infant cry-fuss behaviours, sleep and maternal mood, developed out of 15 years of research.
NDC is a genuine paradigm shift. We flip much of the popular advice parents receive upside down. Our programs integrate the latest lactation science, including ultrasound studies on the biomechanics of infant suck, neuroscience, evolutionary biology, gut science, sleep science, attachment psychology and a new set of powerful psychological strategies known as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
The NDC Accreditation Pathway was launched by Possums & Co in March 2018 and offers an evidence based perinatal programme for primary care providers, including general practitioners, midwives, lactation consultants, registered nurses, occupational therapists, psychologists and other allied health professionals. There are currently 250 health professionals in our NDC network, of whom 48 are NDC Accredited Practitioners.
We offer health professionals:
We are delighted that both the Masterclasses and NDC Accreditation has been approved for CPD points from the RACGP, ACRRM and ACM for the new triennium (24 April 2020- 31 December 2022). Accreditation from the IBLCE is also pending. Two allocations of CPD points are available for both the Masterclasses and NDC Accreditation - one allocation from the breastfeeding modules and the other from the cry-fuss and sleep modules.
