Purpose and Mission

A Registered Nurse (RN) is a key part of a modern, multidisciplinary health care team, and applies the latest standards in the practice of healthcare.

Reports To                   

A registered nurse typically reports to a Team Leader or Nurse Unit Manager.

Supervisory Responsibilities

An RN assumes accountability and responsibility for the care of patients / residents / clients within a wide range of healthcare settings such as hospitals, clinics and specialized care facilities.

Qualifications              

You must hold a current Nursing Registration with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioners Agency) to be employed as an RN.

Appropriate education and some previous experience as a Registered Nurse (in a general or a specialty practice).

Responsibilities of a Registered Nurse  

The responsibilities of the RN role are outlined the Nurse Code of Conduct, and align with the core values of the healthcare facility where he or she is employed.

RNs will provide comprehensive and effective evidence-based nursing care to achieve specific health outcomes for patients.

RNs will recognise and uphold all patients to access health services and advocate for them.

RNs plan and evaluate care together with the multidisciplinary health care team and patients, and must have strong interpersonal communication skills including interpersonal, verbal, written, computer, and to work well with others in the multidisciplinary team.

RNs implement nursing practice in accordance with all laws and relevant codes of ethics, and always take steps to prevent or remedy unsafe nursing practices or unprofessional conduct.

RNs must undertake regular professional development, including a performance and development process, annual mandatory training, and assisting with training and ongoing support to students and less-experienced healthcare staff.

RNs can facilitate clinical research and work toward the advancement of the practice of nursing care.

RNs must ensure a safe and secure environment for and visitors, within the context of a modern quality and risk management framework.

RNs must produce accurate clinical documentation, making sure that all data is accurate and complete, utilising the EHR system of the healthcare facility.

RNS must always be cognizant of and apply all modern Human Resource Management principles when performing their duties, including equal employment opportunity and anti-discrimination.

RNs have a primary responsibility to maintain the personal safety of themselves and others during their daily duties, and that includes assessment and reporting of any issue that create a health and safety risk in the healthcare facility.

RNS may also have other responsibilities as assigned by the Team Leader or Manager of the healthcare facility.
